Ruth Culham, President

Ruth Culham, President of The Culham Writing Company, is the recognized expert in the Traits of Writing assessment field. Ruth is the author of the textbook, 6+1 Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide, Scholastic, Inc. 2003. She creates and conducts teacher workshops & videos, and designs national/international institutes for writing assessment and instruction. Ruth has a highly regarded reputation for lively and engaging workshops, depth and breadth of subject knowledge, sense of humor, volumes of practical and useful materials, and a deeply rooted commitment to classroom teachers and students—the hallmark of her training sessions. The highlight of her 19 years of classroom teaching was when Ruth was named Teacher of the Year in Montana. She has specialty degrees and current certification in Library Science and Elementary, Middle, and Secondary English Education including a doctorate in Educational Administration.

Janice Wright, Consultant
Janice Wright presents Traits of Writing workshops both nationally and internationally. Her dynamic workshops are a lively mixture of instruction and activities, which support implementation of the Traits of Writing model. Janice draws on her ten years of experience in the classroom as a language arts, reading and speech teacher, and her five years as a professional technical writer all of which bring authenticity and credibility to her presentations. Janice has her MS Degree in Education from Western Oregon University and her BS Degree in Speech Communication from Oregon State University. She holds an Oregon teaching license with endorsements in teaching the Deaf, language arts, reading and speech communication.

Sharon Northern, Operations Manager
Sharon Northern is the latest addition to our staff. While new to the Culham Writing Company, Sharon was Ruth's assistant when Ruth was Unit Manager at NW Regional Educational Laboratory. She is thrilled to be working with Ruth again and looks forward to her new and exciting position. Sharon will be your connection to Culham Writing; fielding questions about trainings, products, workshops, and anything else traits. She'll also be organizing our Writers at Work conference and other workshops through Scholastic, liaise between our presenters and clients for workshops, manage the office, and contribute to videos, products and books. An avid reader, lover of cats, movies, music, and running, Sharon is a welcome addition to The Culham Writing Company staff.
